Values help you to get your priorities in order. They are your standards and guiding principles for living. Your values determine what is important in your life. Your beliefs about your life will motivate you to act in one way or another. Values are motivated by traits or behaviors. Our behaviors demonstrate how we feel about something. We develop actions around what matters to us. The values that we create determine how we feel about our self, family, friends, and people who enter our lives.
People learn values from the environment that they grow up in. Adults may adopt new values as they change. Use success as a goal to motivate you to create values. Think about what will make you happy. What are your personal beliefs about happiness? What brings joy to your life? Think about what you want to achieve in life? How do you want to help others?
Develop values in different areas of your life such as an individual, relationships, family, or career. Values self-regulate our behavior. They are what we feel and will always direct us to a goal or purpose based on a need. Take a moment to think about your value system. What does it consist of? Do your values represent a happy life for you? What changes are required to enhance your value system?
“The things that we love tell us what we are” Thomas Aquinas
